History
The Strand was opened in 1901 by the Sarkies Brothers, the Armenian entrepreneurs who also built Raffles in Singapore and the Eastern & Oriental in Penang. It quickly became the grandest hotel in colonial Rangoon, hosting writers like Rudyard Kipling and Somerset Maugham. After decades of decline, it was painstakingly restored in the 1990s and remains a listed heritage building — one of the finest surviving examples of colonial hotel architecture in Asia.
