Chatrium opened its Royal Lake property in 2014–2015 on Natmauk Road, capitalising on one of Yangon's most coveted views — Kandawgyi Lake with Shwedagon Pagoda beyond. The Thai Chatrium group entered Myanmar as tourism and business travel revived after 2011 reforms. The hotel brought resort-scale pools and dining to a lakeside site long associated with recreation since the British created the reservoir in the 1880s.
