Kandawgyi Lake is a serene artificial lake surrounded by lush gardens, offering one of the most picturesque views of the Shwedagon Pagoda reflected in its calm waters.
History
Kandawgyi ("great royal lake") was created in the 1880s when British engineers dammed a creek to supply clean water to colonial Rangoon. The lake and its surrounding gardens became a favoured recreation ground for residents and a scenic frame for views of Shwedagon Pagoda. The golden Karaweik barge restaurant, modelled on a royal vessel, was built on the eastern shore in the 1970s and has become one of Yangon's most photographed landmarks.
